Behind Grounded

What is Serotonin?

Serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a monoamine neurotransmitter. As a neurotransmitter, serotonin carries messages between nerve cells in your brain (your central nervous system) and throughout your body (your peripheral nervous system). These chemical messages tell your body how to work.

Lion's Mane

Studies have shown that Lion's Mane works in the brain to modulate neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin – the “feel good chemicals” which are released when we feel happiness. Antidepressant-like effects were also observed with the oral administration of Hericium erinaceus and it was found to restore expression levels of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, 1. A clinical trial with 30 women reported taking Lion’s Mane increased feelings of well-being and reduction in depression, 2.

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin may indirectly reduce depression by increasing your body’s availability of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, and sleep. Both niacin and serotonin are synthesized by the amino acid tryptophan. Insufficient niacin results in the body converting tryptophan into niacin instead of using it to make serotonin, 3.

Adults who microdose report health related motivations and lower levels of anxiety and depression compared to non-microdosers.

Surveys identify diverse motivations for microdosing; respondents note reducing anxiety and depression, improving well-being, and enhancing cognitive performance as key motivations; less prominent motivations include improving physical health, and enhancing empathy, spirituality, and curiosity, 4, 5, 6.

In addition to microdosing alone, growing interest has focused on a practice referred to colloquially as stacking, the combining of psilocybin microdoses with other mushrooms, e.g. Lion’s Mane, to accentuate salutary effects. A cross-sectional survey of over 4,000 microdosers found that over 50% of psilocybin microdosers combined psilocybin with a combination of niacin (vitamin-B3) and Lion’s Mane, 7. These microdosers report lower levels of substance use disorders, anxiety disorders, and negative emotionality, 8, 9. Additionally, the flushing effects of niacin is suggested to facilitate psilocybin bioavailability and be prophylactic for abuse, 10.
